Holy Redeemer Folk Group
Where: Holy Redeemer Church
The Folk Music Group has been one of the music ministries at Holy Redeemer Parish in North Kildonan for approximately 20 years.
The band is a group of ‘young at heart’ adults – friends who are musicians / musicians who became friends. Some of our members
have been with the group since it began, others have joined their hearts and talents and spirits along the way.
Our musical style is mostly contemporary Catholic Christian music, as well as some folk/contemporary versions of traditional songs. Group members include a number of male and female vocalists, as well as rhythm, lead and bass guitar, African drum and keyboard/organ. Our music is at times lively, joyful and uplifting, at other times reflective and prayerful – very much a contemporary ‘praise & worship’ style.
In addition to being committed parish music ministers for mass, we are active members of our communities and have often provided music for various community events. We’ve performed at a local café, lead chapel music and sing-alongs at prison ministry gatherings, love to assist with special services for Catechism classes and sacramental masses, have provided lively music for family fun days, and are leaders for Praise and Worship at the parish annual Family Camp - a community spiritual weekend held each year in the beauty of the Whiteshell area which provides a weekend for faith, family and friendships to grow.
The Folk Music Group, along with the other Holy Redeemer music ministries, has recorded a music CD titled 'We Believe', featuring a number of our 'tried and true' favorites. In addition, our lead male vocalist, Gary Wallace, has recorded his own CD titled '34 Upton', featuring his own song-writing and musical talents.
